Speaking last week after signing a Memorandum of understanding with a Chinese company, CNG China Construction, Chakabuda said the deal was initiated by Mujuru.
“I have to thank the vice president for initiating this deal after we knocked on her door seeking financial assistance,” said Chakabuda.
“The vice president’s support has to be commended and we appreciate the work she has done to ensure that we get water.” The cash-strapped council has been failing to provide water to its residents because of old and broken infrastructure.
Under the city council’s water argumentation programme, the Chinese company will provide funding and technical support to ensure that new water pipes are laid from Lake Mutirikwi to the city. Lake Mutirikwi is the city’s sole water supply.
The existing pipes were last upgraded in the late 1980s.
Masvingo city town clerk Adolf Gusha said the money provided by the Chinese company would be a loan facility payable within 30 years.
Gusha told journalists that the MOU would enable the Chinese company to approach its government for funding.
