Last year Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa said divorce and other lawsuits went up by 50 percent, which necessitated the swearing in of more judges.
The High Court handled 18, 000 civil cases in 2012 with divorce cases topping the list.
“Women frequent marriage consultancies more than men. Men are not keen to discuss their marital problems with counsellors,” said Mapxashike.
Happy Marriages Consultancy, which was founded in 1998, devised a dialogue and reconciliation framework for fighting marriage problems.
Mapxashike said youths were emerging as the most affected by divorce as their marriages were rushed and immature.
“Most people divorcing are aged between 25-35 years. The other affected age group constitutes couples aged between 45-50 years. These couples are victims of marriage fatigue,” she explained.
Mapxashike added that marriage destruction was being perpetuated by an unstable economy which created massive unemployment, spiraling living costs, geographical spousal separation, misinterpretation of individual rights, unmatched marriage age partners and materialism.
Through her work and writing on marriage, Mapxashike has assisted hundreds of couples who were on the brink of despair in their marital life. She said her biggest challenge was cases of domestic violence.
“At times I feel very discouraged by the number of domestic violence cases. I hope that my contribution towards making the family bond tighter and the family home happier will help,” she said.
