Last year Blessing Chebundo, the Kwekwe Central MP and Chairperson of the Parliamentarians Against HIV and Aids Association, encouraged 73 legislators to take part in the pilot exercise.
Chebundo said the objective was to, “walk the talk as role models and lead by example to embark on voluntary HIV testing as well as to inspire young people to do the same”.
Several other MPs were circumcised under Chebundo’s programme. During last week’s belated World Health Day commemorations conducted by the city’s health department, councillors from the 10 wards were tested. They also spoke to those gathered about the danger of high blood pressure and diabetes.
“There are still groups of people who will only be convinced of the importance of something when they see their preacher doing it,” said Mayor Teddious Chimombe.
World Health Day is celebrated on April 7.
