Addressing thousands of party supporters in Tshovani satdium in Chiredzi over the weekend, Tsvangirai said party supporters should not scramble for posts.
“Why do you all want to be councillors or MPs?” asked Tsvangirai. “We can not all be councillors and MPs. I urge you to talk to each other so that you will not cause confusion.” On voter registration the MDC leader urged party supporters to register to ensure that the party wins in the coming polls. He said it was useless to gather and chant slogans without registering to vote.
“We have to make sure that we all register to vote and those not registered should do so now, so that we win the polls cleanly,” he said.
The MDC leader said the poll dates would be announced once he and president Robert Mugabe agreed on a date. He dismissed the June 29 election date as a mere campaign gimmick by Zanu (PF).
The call by Tsvangirai for party supporters not to rush to be either councillors or MPs comes amid reports that over 5,000 people applied to represent the party in the next election.
Of the 5,000 applicants 1,000 applied to be MPs while 4,000 applied to be councillors.
Sources within the party said the candidate selection process was already over and those given the green light to represent the party would be notified next week.
The MDC-T is currently holding victory rallies because it believes it won during the March 16 referendum. The Chiredzi rally was the first and sources said that more rallies of this nature would be held countrywide.
