Dream comes true for gospel singer

The lead singer from the eight-member gospel music group recalls the first instrument that he played, aged 15, back in his rural home of Tongogara, Shurugwi in the Midlands Province. “It was an empty 5 litre cooking oil container with a few cords tied from one end to the other and it was handmade to resemble a guitar,” said Marvellous Makanyire, now 46, of the David’s Harp group from Kuwadzana Anglican Church.

He remembers how his parents disapproved of his musical passion. “We played the guitar out of mischief and together with my friend, Pastor Gracious Mugwira, we would sing while herding cattle.” The friends formed David’s Harp in 2002 with several other family members after completing their education and relocating to Harare and have just released their debut album Pamuchinjikwa (at the cross).

The six-track album is a fusion of harp, guitars and piano. “As upcoming musicians, we were not prepared for the challenges that we encountered as we tried to release Pamuchinjikwa.

Artists are not supportive of each other especially those that have made it in the industry,” said Makanyire. Mugwira lamented the high costs of recording in Zimbabwe and said exorbitant recording charges were stifling growth in the music industry.
