Energy wastage to be measured

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce and its technical partners, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission Distribution Company and Connect the World, have embarked on a national private sector-led project to establish a National Baseline of Electricity usage by the commercial sector.

ZNCC Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Matiza, said this project aims to reduce energy usage in the commercial entities. He added that the project’s target was to conserve what was already there in order to enable stakeholders to better manage their energy usage. “This baseline information can only be collected by installing smart meters after the main ZETDC meter at Commercial Electricity User premises, commonly known as sub-metering. This would enable us to conduct a comprehensive assessment of energy usage around the country,” said Matiza.

Most Finance and Operations departments have been disempowered in terms of achieving Efficient Energy Usage since these organisations only get to know of their energy bills from the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority. Matiza said bill allocations between cost centres were done arbitrarily using a simple average (total utility bill) thereby hiding energy wasting machinery, operations and departments from being identified and corrected.

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority Communications Manager, Fullard Gwasira, said it was a strategic decision.

“Our objective was to start with domestic prepaid meters on residential homes, then move up to residential premises with more than one building and lastly go commercial,” said Gwasira.

ZNCC is hoping that this project will reduce energy usage by 50 percent by the end of 2013.
