Girls tourney battles for funding

This year’s edition of the annual Girls Against Aids football tournament is hanging in the balance as the oganisers have struggled to secure sponsorship.

The tournament is meant to advocate for the use of sport as a social and economic development tool for local youngsters. Zororo Sekiwa, the Yaso board chairman, said the organisation was encountering challenges getting a sponsor.

Through the yearly initiative, girls participate in a football tournament following which each participating team has to carry out a local community development project of their choice. Sekiwa paid tribute to individuals and firms that had sponsored the event over the last five years. Among these are former national team head coach, Sunday Chidzambga, Clovit Pharmaceuticals, Harambe Holdings and Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS).

“The last two editions have been sponsored by members through contributions from their personal funds but this year it is tighter,” Sekiwa said.
