The Bulawayo City Council has appealed to the government to provide housing for Operation Murambatsvina victims who were dumped at a rubbish site in 2005.

Speaking at a full city council meeting on Wednesday, Bulawayo Mayor Thaba Moyo said the situation at Ngozi Mine was dire.

“The government should assist these people as they are living in extremely difficult conditions with no shelter, water or basic services. With winter approaching, the government should quickly intervene,” said Moyo.

During commemorations for World Habitat day this year, squatters at the Ngozi Mine appealed to the government to save their lives. They complained they were denied government services because they did not have legitimate physical addresses. This led to women giving birth at home and children of primary-school age being taught by school drop outs.
