Helicopter relocation stopped

Following pressure from tourism players here, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development has reversed its decision to evict the Zambezi Helicopter Company from Elephant Hills Helipad and relocate it to a gravel pit in Chamabondo.

The company has been operating for 24 years. In January it was ordered to vacate the area as it had been earmarked for the construction of a temporary exhibition park for the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly.

“The helicopter business is one of the major tourist attractions in the town. As a tour operator, my business relies on this service,” said Ice Moyo, who runs a tour operating company in the area.

In a telephone interview, Shearwater spokesperson Clemence Mukwasi confirmed that the company’s operating license had been renewed.

“Tour operators had prepared for the general assembly and it was just not feasible to construct a usable facility within a period of 86 days,” said Mukwasi. The proposed site is un-serviced with no road network, water or electricity.
