Increase in Agro-processing units in Nampula

The provincial government in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula last year licenced 37 mills, bringing the total number of agro-processing units in the province to 610.

These figures were revealed by the provincial governor, Cidalia Chauque, during a six day working visit to the province by President Armando Guebuza. In particular, Chauque highlighted the Bakheresa mill in the Nacala Special Economic Zone which has a capacity to produce 250 tonnes of wheat flour per day and Afro-Moagens that can produce 96 tonnes of maize flour per day.

He added that two cassava processors have had a significant impact. The Mozambican Agricultural Research Institute (IIAM) has a mill producing eight tonnes per day of cassava flour for baking bread and the brewer Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM) produces beer from cassava bought from local farmers.

A total of 219 mills have been funded by the District Development Fund (FDD), which is still commonly known as “the seven million”, because it began in 2006 as an allocation of seven million meticais (about 235,000 US dollars) from the state budget to each of the country’s 128 districts.

This fund was also used to purchase 17 tractors, 1,819 cattle and the construction of 39 dams.

In 2012 and the first quarter of this year, Nampula province produced 4.4 million tonnes of cassava and 320,000 tonnes of maize.
