ZAPU held a conference for its women and youth wings last week to revamp its structures ahead of the general election. The conference was held at Pelandaba Hall and saw the selection of leaders for 18 national portfolios for the Zimbabwe African Women Unit and Youth Front.

Makwila told The Zimbabwean that her appointment would see an increase in the number of women taking up leadership positions in the party.

“I will start by conducting workshops outlying responsibilities to the women leaders so that we have a clear structure. ZAWU is going to be a vibrant wing,” Makwila said.

A former freedom fighter and teacher by profession, Makwila said she used to be a member of Zanu (PF) but left in 2008.

“I took part in the liberation struggle and went to war at the age of 12. I became the National Secretary for Women Affairs in the War Veteran Association from 1997 to 2003. I joined ZAPU in 2009,” she said.

She is currently eyeing a senatorial post for Beitbridge in the coming election after losing out as Member of Parliament for Luveve in 2008. Makwila is married to Handson Makwila and has three children.

ZAPU national Spokesperson, Mjobisa Noko, told The Zimbabwean that the conference was attended by youths and women from the country’s 10 provinces.
