MDC asks SADC to rein in Mugabe and Tsvangirai for ‘manipulating’ GPA

MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday announced to the media that his party and Zanu (PF) represented by President Mugabe agreed on an election roadmap which would be drawn by Zanu (PF) Patrick Chinamasa and MDC-T Eric Matinenga.

Ncube told journalists at a Press Conference held at MDC offices in Harare today that the GPA has been re-written and turned into a Zanu (PF), MDC-T and Mutambara project rendering the agreement dysfunctional.

MDC wrote to SADC and the facilitator on 28 March 2013 advising them that the GPA resolutions were being violated by Zanu (PF) and MDC-T.

The recent controversial electoral arrangement was reached at by President Mugabe and PM Tsvangirai in Harare yesterday in the absence of Ncube whose participation in the GPA processes was recognised by SADC at the Maputo meeting.

Ncube said when he arrived at President Mugabe’s offices for the meeting following invites by MDC-T top officials yesterday afternoon, PM Tsvangirai denied any knowledge that he (Ncube) would be party to the crucial GPA discussion.

“As MDC we have written to SADC to intervene as a matter of urgency regarding the political madness which prevailed yesterday. We will not recognise any political process which comes out of an arrangement we do not have an input,” said Ncube.

He said his party asked SADC not to approve such a fraudulent electoral process which sidelined the regional body and MDC. “The outcome of coming election is already disputed and SADC should treat it just like that.”

Ncube accused President Mugabe and PM Tsvangirai of forming an alliance aimed at working tirelessly against MDC while shattering the foundation of the GPA.

“Zanu (PF) and MDC-T have found common ground as a result of their violent and corrupt disposition hence the alliance to disrespect SADC and other relevant political players. This is the reason why MDC will never form an alliance with a party that join forces with Zanu (PF) like MDC-T,” Ncube told journalists.

The MDC leader said the chaos charactorising the electoral process and the GPA suites Zanu (PF) interests.

He said the position taken by Mugabe and Tsvangirai literally means Chinamasa and Matinenga would resolve outstanding issues such as the election road map, security sector reform, media reform, necessary amendments to the electoral act before elections are held among others.

The GPA facilitation reportedly held an urged meeting with MDC at its offices and expressed concern at the way Mugabe and Tsvangirai were handling GPA affairs.

“The facilitation expressed shock at what was transpiring in the GPA as a result of Mugabe and Tsvangirai alliance. They said they would make a report to SADC to take swift action in this regard,” said Ncube.

Zimbabwe is expected to hold harmonised elections before end of August this year after the country has adopted a new constitution.

Despite the sidelining MDC said it will be party to Zimbabwe Independence Celebrations set for tomorrow around the country.
