MDC-T assists 2008 victims

The MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has started giving assistance to victims of political violence which marred the 2008 presidential election run–off, but some victims say they have not received a single cent.

Provincial administrator Alec Tabe said the party had mobilised resources to assist the victims, especially those who lost bread winners during the run up to the bloody election.

The programme is expected to cover all areas of Masvingo. Tabe said the party had a data base to identify beneficiaries, but shortage of resources was an obstacle as the party wanted to ensure that everyone benefits from the programme.

Provincial chairman Wilstaff Sitemere said they were targeting those who lost bread winners and those who lost a lot of property. “We do not have much but we are saying at least those affected should get something,” he said.

“We would have loved a situation where proper assistance is provided but this is just a beginning and once resources are availed we will do more,” he added. Lucia Matando of Gutu said the party managed to rebuild her houses, which were gutted by fire when her homestead was set on fire by suspected Zanu (PF) supporters in 2008.

She also received maize seed and clothing through the programme. But one supporter, who suffered serious injuries when a house he was in was set ablaze at Jerera growth point in Zaka, said he had not received a single cent from the party.

The activist, who refused to be named for fear of victimisation, said he now needs special food and body lotions since his skin was extensively damaged by the fire.
