The new constitution allows ‘aliens’ full citizenship rights, including the freedom to vote. Sitting party MPs and councillors have been given a mandate to organise teams to reach out to every household. Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya and his Gweru Urban counterpart Rodrick Rutsvara have kick started the programme.
Jameson Tsuro, the MDC-T Acting Provincial Organising Secretary and spokesperson, said the initiative would strengthen the party ahead of the next elections.
“There is a need to ensure that our supporters are registered and geared up to vote any day in case Zanu (PF) surprises us by declaring an early election date,” said Tsuro. He urged all citizens who were previously denied their right to vote to join MDC-T.
“We are a democratic party. We are the ones who brought Zanu (PF) and Mugabe to the table where we agreed the so-called Aliens should vote. So these people should rally behind the MDC-T so that we finish the struggle together,” said Tsuro.
He added that in areas where the party was weak, the party’s teams would knock on the doors of all households explaining the vision of MDC-T and the need to vote for PM Morgan Tsvangirai.
“There are people who are our fervent supporters but they are not registered to vote. That is why in countries like Kenya you saw popular candidates like Raila Odinga losing elections despite being the favourite,” said Tsuro.
