Zapu, led by former home affairs minister Dumiso Dabengwa, MDC 99 led by Job Sikhala, and the MDC led by professor Welshman Ncube are currently in talks to form a coalition, especially regarding the presidential candidate.
“We are going to accept all forces that need to unite and remove Mugabe from power and this is being done on a win-win basis,” the MDC-T national organizing secretary, Nelson Chamisa, told the Masvingo provincial council at the weekend.
“Some parties have approached us so that we do not forget them once we get into power. We want to make sure that all forces that need to unite and fight Zanu (PF) will be welcome,” he said. “We are not going to dictate terms and we have to agree and see what is beneficial for us all.”
No official comment could be obtained from the other parties. But Sikhala is on record saying that he met Prime Minster Tsvangirai to discuss uniting political parties to fight Zanu (PF). The move comes after the realization that Tsvangirai could have easily cruised to victory in the 2008 election had the anti-Zanu (PF) vote not been split. The other presidential hopeful, Simba Makoni, got 8 percent of the votes but. He was backed by the MDC then led by Arthur Mutambara and Zapu.
