MDC-T freezes executive posts

The MDC-T has frozen its executive posts for this district following intra-party violence.

There are two rival camps in the district, one reportedly led by the Provincial Chairperson, Lilian Timvious, and another linked to expelled member, Alois Zhou, who was dismissed on allegations of corruption.

The latest attempt to constitute party structures was made last month. Rowdy youths physically attacked the provincial leadership led by Timvious on claims that they wanted to impose candidates. The violence stopped after the intervention of anti-riot police officers who rounded up the youths.

“We have made the decision to freeze the posts for the district until we pass the next harmonised elections,” Jameson Tsuro, the MDC-T Acting Midlands Organising Secretary, said.

He justified the position saying it was in the interest of the party ahead of the forthcoming elections.

“We realised that after past disturbances, further attempts to have elections would destabilise the party. Instead of allowing for contestation among party members, it is better we all work for victory in the next elections,” he said. Former District Treasurer, Enerst Gumbo, has since announced that he has defected from the party to join the MDC formation led by Welshman Ncube.

He revealed that he had already been granted the green light to represent his new party in the race for the Zvishavane parliamentary seat. However, Tsuro downplayed the defection saying MDC-T would remain strong in the absence of Gumbo. Together with former Area Public Prosecutor, Leopord Mudisi, Gumbo is one of the disqualified candidates who wanted to represent MDC-T in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
