MKD working on "grand coalition for change"

Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn is currently in consultations over the formation of a grand coalition with political players and individuals dedicated to seeing a new political dispensation in Zimbabwe after the forthcoming harmonised polls, the party’s President, Simba Makoni has said.

Makoni made the revelations while addressing journalists in the capital today.

“We would like to work for a grand coalition for change. We would be seeking to work with like-minded people and we will not be limiting ourselves to political parties only but we will be reaching out to the whole of Zimbabwe.

“We know there are good leaders outside politics and we would like to mobilise that leadership so that we eradicate the problems of hunger and starvation,” said Makoni.

Makoni however did not disclose his party’s preferred coalition partners insisting that MKD is “willing to work with anybody”.

Makoni added that the grand coalition will not only be limited to elections.

“We are not only talking about a coalition for elections but a coalition for Zimbabwe to work again. In our concept, the grand coalition is not only limited to elections because even after election, the need for the grand coalition will still remain,” said Makoni.

He expressed concern that the electorate is living in fear ahead of elections. “Every day we live in fear. People in kombis will constrain themselves in conversation because they do not know who the next person is.

People attend a certain gathering that they do not desire to attend because they know violence will be unleashed against them if they do not attend,” said Makoni.

He took a swipe at the country’s security chiefs for deviating from their legal mandate and acting in a partisan manner through pushing Zanu (PF’s) agendas.

Zimbabwe’s security chiefs are on record vowing to block an MDC-T rule in the country. “I believe that the security sector in Zimbabwe is made up of professional men and women.

However, there are individuals who occupy high offices in the institutions of state security who have become political commissars of a certain political party,” said Makoni.

He added that the country has so far failed to make meaningful progress in creating a conducive environment for free and fair elections as evidenced by the failure of the Government of National Unity to achieve true national healing ahead of the polls.

“If we had peace and reconciliation, we won’t be still living in fear five years after the formation of the Inclusive Government. I rank the area of haling and reconciliation as the single highest priority for the people,” said Makoni.
