The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission was supposed to kick start mobile registration in January but failed due to financial constraints.
Zanu (PF) spokesperson Rugare Gumbo told The Zimbabwean this week: “We have appealed to the RG’s office to kick start the process. In the meantime we are just encouraging our supporters to register.” He said he was not aware of his party providing logistical support, adding “but l don’t see anything wrong with it”.
Kurauone Chihwayi, the Deputy Spokesperson for the MDC led by Welshman Ncube, confirmed that their party was providing transport at provincial level to ferry members to registration points. “Whenever the provincial vehicles are not busy, supporters are being ferried to the centres. We would have expected ZEC to be on the ground by now but they have failed,” said Chihwayi.
He said the ZEC secretariat “was frustrating citizens and people had lost confidence in the whole electoral process.”
“What is surprising is that there has been massive logistical support for the registration of soldiers and the police, but ordinary citizens are being frustrated at the RG’s offices,” he added.
