According to a report in Monday’s issue of the Maputo dally “Noticias” the victim is a teacher in the district of Rapale, who raised the question at a rally addressed by Chauque. He claimed he had not recovered his motorbike, because the thief is the son of “an untouchable”.
The teacher said he had contacted various institutions in the justice system to no avail. No-one had doubted his version of events, but nobody could say if or when the case would come to trial.
The teacher was one of several speakers at the rally who denounced the poor performance of the police and other justice institutions in the district, and in the nearby provincial capital, Nampula city.
Chauque urged the organs of the administration of justice in Rapale to do their job properly, particularly in bringing criminal cases to trial, with speed and with transparency so that they could gain credibility in the eyes of the public
“Nobody is above the law in our country”, she stressed. “It’s sad that a teacher works with sacrifice for many years, and after he manages to buy his motorbike, somebody comes along and steals it. This case must be followed up”.
She urged the Rapale district government to follow the case until it comes to trial. It should not be allowed to drag on for a long time, merely because the alleged thief is the son of a prosecutor.
