Preparations for this year’s harmonised elections have gathered momentum, with both MDC’s in the selection process for primary elections, while the MDC- T is to kickstart primary elections country-wide next week.
The MKD president said the party was yet to come up with a date to discuss the selection process for candidates to contest on the party’s ticket. “We are yet to set a date for our annual national convention but as of now, we do not have structures throughout the country,” he said.
Despite this admission, Makoni insisted that his party could compete as a “credible alternative to Zanu (PF) and the two MDCs”, saying “in terms of supporters, we are all over”.
Makoni cited lack of finance and the fear factor among the electorate as the main challenges affecting the establishment of party structures countrywide.
“People have told me that they agree and support me, but they cannot come out in the open,” he said. “Besides material resources such cars, fuel and t- shirts to mobilise for support, the party is aware of the current political hostility in the country and we do not want to compromise the safety of our supporters,” added the ex- Zanu (PF) politburo member.
In the 2008 elections, Makoni garnered 8, 3 % of the votes for president, after campaigning for only two months – effectively denying Morgan Tsavangirai the majority he needed to succeed Mugabe.
