PSL Round-up with Brenna Matendere

The 2012 Premier Soccer League’s Golden Boot winner, Nelson Maziwisa, has set himself a strong foundation of repeating the same feat again this year. The lanky forward, recalled from a season-long loan at Shabanie Mine, has twice grabbed in his side’s opening three matches.

This has brought his tally to five goals in three matches almost half the number achieved by Rodrick Mutuma in 2011, when he was crowned top goal scorer after his stint at champions Dynamos.

Maziwisa’s second brace over the weekend powered his side to a 2-0 victory over police side, Black Mambas, at Morris Deport grounds on Saturday. The helped the Tenant Chilumba-coached side maintain their position at the summit of the log with 9 points.

Alongside Bulawayo giants, Highlanders, the platinum miners are only the second side to have maintained a hundred percent start to the league. Bosso conceded their first league goal of the season when they dismissed Triangle 2-1, in an exciting tie that brought PSL action back to the sugar-rich town for the first time in years.

The Kelvin Kaindu-coached Bosso trail FC Platinum only on goal difference, after they achieved same number of points so far in the season. FC Platinum Assistant coach, Tendai Chikuni, said Maziwisa’s strength lay with his ability to position himself well inside the penalty box. Ironically, the striker is still not in the plans of German-born Warriors coach, Klaus Dieter Pagels.

The weekend action also saw three ugly scenes staged by coaches in domestic football, for which two clubs could find themselves being penalised by the PSL. Mambas coach, John “Toto” Ncube will have to pay a $500 fine for shying away from post-match media interviews, while his club should fork out $2,000 for the same offence.

The same penalties will also meet Motor Action, following similar behaviour by their stand-in coach, David George, who was dejected by a 4-0 demolition at the hands of Harare City. Interestingly, the side’s owner, Eric Rosen, is a PSL board member and took part in crafting the standing orders. Highlanders’ Zambian gaffer, Kelvin Kaindu, was given marching his orders in Triangle for remonstrating with the referee.
