Senior nurse suspended over alleged bribery

The Principal Nursing Tutor at Mpilo School of Nursing, Wanzai Majada, was recently suspended over corruption allegations.

The development comes as Mpilo Group of Hospitals, one of the biggest medical institutions in Zimbabwe, has embarked on an aggressive rebranding exercise, focusing on vibrant service delivery and public relations.

According to well-placed sources at the hospital, Majada was suspended over allegations of soliciting bribes from aspiring nurses.

“Majada and some other tutors have been implicated in a scam where aspiring nurses were made to pay bribes ranging from $500 to $1,000. Investigations are ongoing and more tutors are likely to be suspended,” said a source at the hospital who refused to be named for fear of victimisation.

The Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence Mantiziba ,who insiders credit with the rebranding campaign that has resulted in a major facelift of the institution, refused to comment. “I am more comfortable with issues relating to our attempts to bring back glory to Mpilo,” he said.

In 2011, a senior tutor at the Bulawayo United Hospitals (UBH) was suspended after being implicated in a similar scam. The tutor has since been reinstated.
