Students fight for political space

The Zimbabwe National Students Union plans to mobilise as many students as possible to vote in the coming elections, according to president, Pride Mukono.

“Students are finding the voter registration process inhibitive and we are calling on the authorities to decentralise the process,” he said.

Mukono said this would not only serve the students but the surrounding communities as well.

Tertiary institutions have become the centre of the public sphere in their local areas. Midlands State University has transformed the Senga area in Gweru and the Great Zimbabwe University has revitalised the Mashava mining town.

As a result, the allegiance of the student vote is one is sought after by the major political players in the country.

Zinasu has said it is endorsing the candidature of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC-T formation having earlier invited all the parties to present their manifestos to the students’ body.

Youth Information and Education for Behavior Change Trust programmes officer, David Chidende, cautioned Zinasu for being wholly associated with one political party.

“They risk being perceived as an appendage of the party and this may compromise their activities in lobbying for students’ rights,” Chidende said.
