There will be stashing of teeth

We open with the news that the Harare City Council has misplaced $325,000 and fingers are pointing at two senior employees. I don’t know which is more shocking: the fact that City Hall did not have internal checks and balances to prevent this sort of thing from occurring or that our city council had that sort of money in its coffers. If only the city fathers had used the money to fill up the moon-craters on Harare’s roads.

Douglas Mwonzora, spokesperson of the Tsvangirai led faction of the MDC, has promised fisticuffs in the run up to elections. ‘If you are beaten by Zanu (PF), supporters fight back.’

Here’s what I don’t get about African politics. Why must we pull out the pangas and machetes during elections? The whole point of elections is to put an X against the name of the person you want to represent you. That’s all it is.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Clement Munoriarwa makes the news for saying the ZRP has the duty of denouncing sanctions. There is a difference of opinion between the taxpayers and the esteemed assistant commissioner. The citizenry’s expectations of the police are not anti-sanction speeches but a police force that does actual policing. The function of the police is simple: uphold the law. Bulawayo is the venue for a water summit this week. Over several years, there are two things that have remained unchanged. One of them is the war in the Middle East, the other is talk of a water project in Bulawayo. Will it ever happen?

The City of Kings should refuse any further discussions and summits. Addressing independence celebrations, President Mugabe announced that Zimbabwe’s economy grew 4,4% in the last year. The figure could be even greater if we evicted the man doing nothing but digging for mbeva on our precious arable land. The growth would be greater if we plugged the leakages in our mining sector. Zimbabwe will remain wealthy in resources but impoverished in reality, as long as we permit any random man with a hoe and shovel to dig for minerals.

In an articled entitled ‘Various Prophets Predict President’s Victory’, various words leap off the paper: ‘annointed’, ‘chosen’ and ‘God’. The same article quotes VP Mujuru as having said God appoints heads of state. Who can say all leaders are God-elected? A roll call of names to put things into perspective: Stalin, Musolini, Hitler, Ceausescu.

Greecent Maphosa of Bulawayo will be a guest of the Zimbabwe Prison Services for a year, after being convicted of robbery. Maphosa robbed a Bulawayo man at knife point, taking everything including his false teeth. One senses the end is nigh when muggers rob people of their teeth. What is it the phrase – gnashing of teeth or stashing of teeth?

Till next week, my pen is capped. – Feedback: jera@workmail.com
