Thousands mourn murdered Black Rhinos star woman footballer

Some estimated 2 000 mourners yesterday converged at the emotionally charged burial of the Army Black Rhinos Queens Football Team play maker, Moreblessing Duwati (19) who was murdered here last Sunday evening in cold blood by a suspected jilted lover.

The body of the deceased was discovered by passersby early Monday morning on the verges of a bush road in Nyazema Township.

A kitchen knife was left stuck in the neck while a pocket knife used in a failed attempt to behead her was abandoned at the scene of the crime. Her upper body sustained multiple knife cuts.

Mourners drawn from across the country including top army and Zimbabwe Football Association officials attended the burial which left hundreds weeping at the body viewing.

Speaking at the graveside Black Rhinos Queens vice chairperson army Major Zimano Zuwa described the late Moreblessing as a gifted left footed footballer who will be hard to replace.

“This is a man made tragic loss to Black Rhinos Football Club, the army and the nation at large which will not be easily forgotten. Zimbabwe soccer is the biggest loser following the barbaric murder act. Moreblessing was a rare breed of a few gifted footballers ever to emerge in Zimbabwean soccer was poised for greater heights. She is irreplaceable,” said Zuwa.

She was earmarked for a position in the Zimbabwe Mighty Warriors team.

Administrator for Marange Women Super League Theresa Maguraushe described Moreblessing as women soccer’s own ‘Adam Ndlovu’. “She is a women soccer hero of the equivalence of the legendary national soccer hero Adam Ndlovu who perished in a recent road accident.”

The majority of mourners could not contain their anger and shouted that the culprit deserved immediate death sentence.

Grieved fellow Black Rhinos Queens were the coffin bearers and also displayed some football skills at the burial in memory of their departed club mate.

Police said they were investigating the murder case and a Macheke man was assisting them with investigations. “We are making encouraging breakthroughs in the investigations and a suspect is helping with investigations.”

Blessing joined Black Rhinos Queens last June after her talent was discovered by a ZIFA Referees Commissioner Moffat Tembo who recommended her to Black Rhinos Coach Nesbert Saruchera.

She made the grade and immediately changed fortunes of the army women soccer premier league team. Black Rhinos Queens went on to grab the 2012 Marange Women National Supper League Championship.

Together with other footballers in her category they were expected to undergo military training in the near future to help secure their military career after football.
