Tortured brothers vow to return home

Brothers Timothy, Joseph and Innocent Matopeya have surfaced here where they have been hiding following the burning of their homestead in Silobela by suspected Zanu (PF) supporters and CIO agents during the 2008 elections.

Timothy, a former journalist and MDC-T council candidate in Silobela, Makhaba ward 22 in 2008, said they would return home to campaign for change.

“We are returning home to pioneer change. I was stabbed twice in my arm and stomach. I am still in pain today as I didn’t receive proper medication. We were forced out of our homestead after they burnt down our houses. I have been a victim of Zanu (PF) thugs and security officers ,” he said.

Joseph said it still pains him that those who victimised them are still roaming the streets. “We were beaten and jailed for no reason. We lost our house and what pained me most was that they took advantage our father who was a headmaster and threatened to freeze his pension money. We still need justice and the only way to get it is to go back home and campaign for total change,” he said.

A frightened Innocent said the former deputy commander of the air force, now Zanu (PF) director of commissariat, Henry Muchena, personally confronted him after their houses were destroyed.

“I was arrested by some plain-clothed policemen who started asking me questions about my involvement in MDC. They beat me for four days as I was kept in custody week,” said Innocent, who became actively involved in politics during the formative stages of the MDC-T.

“Muchena offered to give me money to leave the community for good. This was an insult to me and one day I will make sure that justice prevails. I am convinced that he was involved in our torture and loss of houses,” he added.
