Trade Fair benefits outsiders: ZNCC

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce is skeptical about the chances offered by the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair to local businesses saying it will in fact provide a platform for South African companies to further entrench their dominance of the local market.

ZNCC president, Oswell Binha, told The Zimbabwean that the fair was a welcome development for South Africa. “The South African government is sending a strong delegation this year and even though they say they are coming to look for partners, we know the reality is that they will further establish themselves on the Zimbabwean market,” Binha said.

According to Binha, Zimbabwe has become a haven for external products because of a collapsed manufacturing sector.

“Those who are coming will only end up judging the country as a highly informalised economy because of the quality and level of local exhibits,” Binha said. The ZNCC president said elections also posed a problem.

“People will come with an investigative approach to see how things are and try to gauge where they are going and not necessarily to do business,” Binha said.

In spite of all these challenges he said it was still a good platform for local companies and the chamber of commerce was looking forward to the fair.

ZITF will be held from April 23 to 27 in Bulawayo. Malawi’s President Joyce Banda will officially open this year’s fair.
