The arts outfit has won several artistic awards and is one of the few groups to be invited to the event.

“We will be leaving for the States on the 4th of May. We have already secured visas from the American embassy and we are ready to descend on New York and do what we know best, a captivating performance,” said Matesu Dube, the Director of the group.

Matesu said he would be travelling with 18 members of the group and promised to lift the Zimbabwean flag high. The American tour is a result of a visit by representatives of Brooklyn Academy of Music. “The fact that our group was selected means that we are a good side. We are going to the States to represent our country and we want to assure Zimbabweans that we will not let them down,” he said.

Some of the groups who failed to make the grade include Iwisa, Umdumo, Wesizwe, and Siyaya. Matesu said the group would also perform in Washington DC, Denver and New York as well as participate in exchange programmes with other artists.

“Our tour starts in Denver and Colorado where we will perform for one week before going to Brooklyn, New York for two weeks. We’ll then head to Washington DC where we will spend a week before returning home,” said Matesu.

The group has represented the country in numerous high profile international arts festivals. Umkhathi Theatre Works is also involved in training school children in theatre.

Early this year, the group was voted the most outstanding dance group in the National Arts Merit Awards. The group also introduced the Uhambo dance show.
