UNFPA’s new advisor

Prominent children and women’s rights advocate, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzwanda, has been appointed to the United Nations Population Fund Global Advisory Panel.

The panel will advise the organisation on ways to achieve the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. Gumbonzwanda’s appointment is in recognition of her commitment as a human rights’ lawyer to the upliftment of women and youth globally.

“I am honoured by my appointment to the advisory panel. I am grateful to colleagues for all the advice and content we share as we advance the rights and well being of young people, women and indeed all citizens in this world,” she said in an interview from Geneva, Switzerland.

Gumbonzwanda’s appointment, alongside experts from civil society and other sectors, coincided with the countdown to the 1000 days to achieve the MDGs, a set of goals set by the United Nations by 2015.

UNFPA and its partners are working on initiatives to attain these goals, which include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, promoting gender equality, empowering women, reducing child mortality rates, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases as well as ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development.

Gumbonzwanda’s appointment further raises her human rights and administrative profile.
