War vets clash with governor

War veterans and their wives last week besieged Governor Titus Maluleke’s offices here for the second time in less than a month demanding to be allocated sugar cane plots. They also demanded that youths arrested in Bikita while engaging in illegal mining activities should not be prosecuted.

Locking themselves in meeting with him, war vet leaders gave Maluleke up to the end of this week to allocate them plots in the lucrative sugar cane producing lowveld area of the province, while their colleagues waited outside the office.

The group’s spokesman, Kid Muzenda, said they had lost patience with Maluleke. “He should give us what belongs to us which is the land. If he is not capable of doing that then he should just pack his bags and go before we chase him away,” said Muzenda.

The Governor chairs the land committee responsible for allocating land to the people. Investigations have revealed that some 150 people have been given offer letters to grab sugar cane plots in Chiredzi. The war veterans want Maluleke to speedily finalise the deal before the elections. The governor refused to talk to the press.

In a surprise move the war veterans are also demanding that a group of about 100 youths arrested during a police clampdown on illegal miners in Bikita be spared from prosecution.

It has emerged that senior Zanu (PF) officials are involved in the illegal mining of tantalite. Police sources said the youths confessed to having been sent by the officials to mine the mineral, which is fetching between $75 and 100 per kg.

“We were given permission to mine by our leaders,” said one of the youths who refused to be named for fear of victimisation.
