We cannot allow Mozambique to be divided – Guebuza

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza stressed on Sunday, in the Muaguide administrative post, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, that Mozambicans should not allow their country to be divided.

Speaking at a rally, as part of his tours around the country, known as the “open and inclusive presidency”, Guebuza stressed that Mozambicans, even at local level, are a mixture of ethnic groups, ages and genders. “Unity is a tremendous force that will help us overcome many of our challenges”, he said.

Appeals to peace and unity have dominated, not only the speeches given by the President in Cabo Delgado, but also the messages presented by local residents during the rallies

In Muaguide, for instance, the people who spoke at the rally were unanimous in asking Guebuza to do his utmost to ensure that the country does not return to war. Doubtless they were reacting to the violence in early April when armed men loyal to the former rebel movement Renamo killed four members of the riot police in an attack against the police post in the small central town of Muxungue.

Guebuza agreed with these appeals for peace. He pointed out, for instance, that it will take time and investment to ensure that the national electricity grid reaches more citizens, and this will not be possible without peace.

In addition to the calls for peace and unity, the “open presidency” has been an opportunity for people attending Guebuza’s rallies to point to what they regard as errors in the way the country is governed, providing advice so that such mistakes are not repeated in future.

On Monday, Guebuza worked in Macomia district, and on Tuesday he is due to take part in the commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the death of Romao Fernandes Farinha, a Frelimo guerrilla commander who fell in the war for the country’s Independence and is now regarded as a national hero.

On Wednesday, Guebuza is scheduled to inaugurate a cashew processing factory in Nangade district, and a rural hospital in Chiure. He will also visit the port facilities in the provincial capital, Pemba.
