Countrywide, Independence Day commemorations are done on April, 18, and various activities are done at provincial and district levels to mark this important day on the Zimbabwean calendar.
Y2Y in collaboration with Zimbabwe Sunshine Group, Environment Africa, CONNECT, Youth Vision of Hope Foundation and other youth groups, will celebrate the country’s birthday, tomorrow, by conducting a clean- up campaign at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
Founder and Director of Y2Y in Zimbabwe said the campaign, entitled “Youth Volunteers: Creating Sanity for UNWTO” aims to accelerate the MDGs 1 000 days momentum declared by the United Nations to achieve Goal Number seven of environmental sustainability by 2015.
Catherine Masunda said “We realised that conducting the clean- up campaign on the same day as the Independence celebrations is not feasible considering that the final soccer match for the Independence trophy finishes late.
“We decided to clean up the National Sports Stadium the day after Independence celebrations as a way of conscientising other youths that it is our duty to ensure that we maintain environmental sustainability.”
Masunda highlighted that the campaign is a build up to the UNWTO General Assembly hence the title “Youth Volunteers: Creating Sanity for UNWTO.”
Masunda hinted that the campaign would also rope in public transport operators and educate them on the importance of urging their passengers to utilise waste disposal bins both inside kombis and at the bus terminals.
She said “The campaign, which would also involve the distribution of 10 000 waste collection bins to the public transport operators, also aims at educating members of the public on the importance of keeping our environment clean.”
The youth Ambassador of Harare, Dereck Mpofu is expected to be part of the 50 member team that confirmed to be taking part in the clean up campaign, with the sub theme “Mararamubinwaiziva!” meaning litter in the bin, you know!
The clean up campaign comes against the backdrop of a massive turn out of Zimbabweans at the Independence day commemorations, the celebrations which ended with a soccer match pitching arch rivals Dynamos and Highlanders.
