ZADHR concerned as government fails to provide safe water

Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights has expressed concern over the failure by government to meet its obligation to provide safe drinking water for its citizens following the popularization of bottled water in The country.

There have been several reports that suppliers of bottled water are selling contaminated water which is slowly poisoning the human body.

“ZADHR notes with great concern the recent disturbing media reports that some water bottling companies are putting on the market contaminated water.

“This development must be a wake-up call to the local authorities and the government of Zimbabwe. The popularization of bottled purified water in Zimbabwe mirrors the failure by the government to meet its obligation to provide safe and portable water to its citizens,” read a statement by ZADHR yesterday.

According to ZADHR cholera and typhoid outbreaks in the country have seen residents shunning drinking tap water for bottled water.

Zimbabwe was hit by a cholera outbreak in 2008 and 2009.It is currently besieged by a typhoid outbreak that has affected more than 2 800 people.

The outbreaks were linked to inadequate water supply, the use of shallow wells and lack of capacity to collect garbage.

“The situation is compounded by the erratic supplies of water in some suburbs. As advocates for the right to health in Zimbabwe, we note that provision of contaminated water both from the public sector or private sector is a violation of the right to clean water, right to health and a threat to human life.

“ The public must continue to encourage state institutions to effectively monitor water safety and to take appropriate action to ensure that contaminated water is not sold or distributed,” ZADHR said.
