Addressing pupils at a pre Independence Day celebration for children from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe, President Mugabe said at 33, Zimbabwe was a mature democracy that resulted from the sacrifices and dedication of liberation war fighters.
He said “We will be going for elections soon and we must ensure that we win: for our people to exercise their sovereignty.”
He said it was the duty of the present generation to ensure that they protect the gains of the liberation struggle, considering that the country had attained political freedom and was heading for total control of the economy through the implementation of the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act.
“We should own everything that is in our country, from the forests, rivers, companies and everything,” he said.
Mugabe commended teachers for the critical role that they play in the development of the nation and said “they are responsible for shaping the children’s value systems.”
He said “I thank our teachers countrywide for playing the crucial role of looking after the children on behalf of the parents.”
Mugabe hosts children in primary to high schools every year on the eve of the Independence day.
Zimbabwe celebrates 33 years of independence from the British colonial regime. Mugabe’s party, Zanu PF, has been in power since 1980 while he has retained Presidency over the party.
