Gonye is a former national sprinter and current ZOC treasurer.
According to the ZOC Chief, Anna Mguni, the GA that will be held at Harare’s Prince Edward School this Sunday will also be seeking to elect several people into posts within the committee.
“The GA is the highest authority on all matters to do with the Olympic Movement in Zimbabwe and holds its meetings annually,” she said.
“According to Article 12 of the ZOC Constitution, at least every four years and not more than eight months after the completion of the Olympic Games, the GA must meet to elect members of the Executive Board, or fill any vacancy on the Executive Board.”
Various associations affiliated to the Olympic Committee were invited to nominate and forward names of candidates. Nominations received and the status of nominating associations was verified by the ZOC Executive Board at its Special Meeting, last week.
The nominated candidates will contest to fill 11 vacancies, with the provision that at least three of the elected should be women as of the ZOC Constitution Article 15.
The elections will be presided over by ZOC Trustee Mike Ndubiwa and Sports and Recreation Commission Director General Charles Nhemachena.
