The current exercise has been marred by limited information dissemination, lack of funding and allegations of manipulation made against the Registrar General’s office.
Analysts and other political parties including the MDC-T have accused the RG’s office of trying to manipulate the exercise in favour of Zanu (PF). MDC-T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said his party had worked hard to “force the adoption of a resolution” that after the adoption of the Constitution there would be an accelerated voter registration for a month.
“There is going to be one full month dedicated to voter registration and we are happy with that,” he said.
Mwonzora said he expected the accelerated exercise to be more credible than the current mobile exercise. MDC-N spokesman Nhlanhla Dube said only the people running the accelerated exercise could make it work.
“If they run it in the same manner as the current exercise, obviously we are going to have problems. If it is done in a proper manner, then it will be acceptable,” Dube said.
He said that what mattered was the attitude of the people undertaking the exercise. “The expectation we have is that people must do their national duty,” Dube said.
The current mobile exercise started on April 29 and will end on May 20.
Co-Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi has said that registration teams were concentrating on remote areas.
