Another MDC-T official convicted

Local MDC-T Ward 1 Councillor Sam Chimedza has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently selling commercial stands. Earlier this year another MDC-T official, Ward 11 Kwekwe councillor Johanes Ngodzo, was slapped with a five year jail term for a similar offence and five other cases of fraud.

In Gweru, Councillor Clemence Kwaru is awaiting judgement on a case in which he reportedly duped home seekers. He was found guilty by Magistrate Sorry Rushambwa for having sold fake commercial stands to Ashwell Ruswa and Tandekai Madzivira.

Prosecutor Talent Tadenyika told the court that on 4 June last year, Chimedza entered into a transaction with Ruswa in which he sold to him a commercial stand he falsely claimed ownership.

The stand, Number 5 108 located in Mandava surbub, was also sold by the MDC-T official to another buyer Madzivira. In both incidents, Chimedza charged $ 6, 000 for the piece of land and instructed the buyers to pay in instalments.

The matter came to light when the two buyers clashed at the town house claiming ownership of the property leading to the arrest of Chimedza. Magistrate Rushambwa ruled that eight months of Chimedza’s sentence would be set aside if he pays restitution of $4,700 to the two complainants by 20 May.

Last year the MDC-T instructed Deputy Secretary General Tapiwa Mashakada to carry out a probe on councillors. The investigations led to the expulsion of 12 corrupt city fathers and three mayors who had assumed office on the party ticket during the 2008 harmonised elections. Several other councillors are on suspension of between one and five years for having indulged in graft in order to line their pockets.
