Prosecutor Vimbai Chinoda and witnesses who gave testimony in court said on that day the two accused, Blessing Chikwira and Lisbon Jaure, clad in Zanu (PF)’s T-Shirts, approached Biti armed with a knife as he took to the stage to give his address. Chikwira, who was holding the knife, shouted unprintable obscenities as he charged towards Biti.
Witnesses told the court that though police details were present, they did not apprehend the two immediately and only started acting after MDC-T youths providing security had grabbed the men five meters away from Biti.
However, this week magistrate Tendai Manwere discharged the two at the end of the state’s case and said they could not be put on their defence. He also said the state’s case was too weak and upheld an application for discharge put forward by Chikwira’s lawyer, Valentine Matutu, which stated:
“The accused denies the charge and, in fact, states that he never had a knife on him but that the knife was planted on him by members of the MDC-T. At no given time did he attempt to attack Biti.”
