She died of diabetes and was declared provincial heroine by the politburo due to her contributions during the struggle for independence. Mugabe made a surprise visit to the couple’s home in the city and subsequently gave a speech marked with praises for Msipa.
“I had nowhere to stay and the Msipas hosted me in their home in Harare when I had come from Ghana (in the 60s) to join politics back home. Since then we have been very close,” said Mugabe, who described Msipa as “not corrupt, straightforward, honesty and one who does not backbite on party leaders.”
According to sources, this unsettled Zanu (PF) officials who are eying various posts, including that of Vice President, which is traditionally filled by a former PF Zapu member.
“There are now heated maneuvers by officials to discredit Msipa before nominations for the VP post are made,” said a source. Mines Minister Obert Mpofu and former ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo are vying fiercely for the post.
