EU urges media freedom

Governments must allow journalists to work in safety without fear of censorship and prosecution, says the European Union in its declaration for the World Press Freedom Day marked annually across the globe on 3 May.

The EU said a free, independent and vibrant press is indispensible in any democratic society.

“The EU is determined to fight for press freedom worldwide and condemns the increasing level of intimidation, violence and censorship that journalists face in many countries,” reads part of the declaration distributed to the media.

A call was made for protection of freedom of expression both in traditional media and new online media.

The EU expressed its determination towards promotion of freedom of expression.

“The European Block will also continue to condemn violations of the right to freedom of expression in all media, with a view to ensuring that journalists from all corners of the world go about their roles without hindrance,” said the bloc.

Tribute was paid to journalists who dedicate their lives sometimes at great personal cost as they seek to report events or expressing views that many might prefer to silence.

Zimbabwean journalists joined the rest of the world in the commemorations through speeches and marches for Press Freedom across the country
