She is one of six women nominated for the position that fell vacant after former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet resigned recently to stand for re-election in her country’s presidential polls.

“Gumbonzvanda has worked hard to be where she is today,” said analyst Faith Chikore. “It’s time for Africa and Zimbabwe to occupy such a post. More specifically, she possesses qualifications and experience to lead the organisation. We know she is up against a top Canadian former Prime Minister who poses much threat but the world demands new ideas and she is the right person for that position.” Masimba Dube, a lecturer at Unisa, said: “Considering that she comes from a still growing continent she understands problems confronted by suffering women on a daily bases and she deserves a chance to change their lives. With her experience nothing can stop her and it will be of great advantage for our country if she lands the position,” added Dube. Jenny Williams of Women of Zimbabwe Arise said her organisation was convinced Gumbonzvanda deserved the position. “We are strongly behind her. We know with her capabilities she can bring a lot of positive change to the women global-wide,” she said.

At present Gumbonzvanda is the general secretary of the World Young Women’s Christian Association, a leading international network of women that advocates for peace, justice, human rights worldwide.

“This is indeed a significant role within the United Nations; I am humbled and honoured to be considered for it as I really feel confident and ready for the role. I am just so grateful to many people around the world for this extraordinary affirmation and solidarity, including from my own country Zimbabwe,” Gumbonzvanda.
