Invest in infrastructure: meteorologist

The government should make efforts to enforce building standards
in areas susceptible to flooding in order to mitigate the effects
of natural disasters, the Meteorological Services Department has said.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean, Chartered Meteorologist, Elisha
Moyo, said most houses were poorly built
in areas such as Muzarabani, Nyanga, Beitbridge and some parts of
Masvingo Province. Heavy rainfall in these areas has, for the past few years, left many people homeless.

A January report by the United Nations Office for Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs said that heavy rains that started on January
7 this year affected an estimated 8,490 people across Zimbabwe. “The building standards in these areas need to be
improved. Each year, the intensity of the floods is increasing so what
is required is for us to revisit the building standards,” said Moyo.

He added that the government and other development partners had a role to
play in ensuring houses were built
to standard.
