Kanengoni, who was the CIO’s deputy director (internal) and a former Zanu PF central committee member, died after collapsing last wednesday at the Concession farm he invaded during the chaotic land upheavals about a decade ago.
He was declared a national hero by Zanu (pf) and was being buried today at the national shrine outside Harare.
“We do no t recognize him as a Hero. What he did to the people of Zimbabwe is unforgivable and unforgettable. He is one o f the people who pumped seven bullets into Patrick Kombayi, a defenceless civilian during elections. So he was actually a promoter and an active participant in election violence, and the MDC cannot honor such people. We want heroes who in their life time were respecting people of Zimbabwe. The national Heroes acre is not a place for assassins and murderers. It is a place for patriots “,Mwonzora told theZimbabwean on Monday.
Kombayi was an MDC-T Senator at the time of his death in 2008.
In the run-up to the 1990 legislative elections, the Gweru businessman sustained serious injuries and had to seek treatment in London after being shot by Kanengoni, then a CIO officer, and Kizito Chivamba, who was a Zanu PF MP for Chiwundura.
Kombayi was challenging Vice President Simon Muzenda for the Gweru urban seat at the time.
Chivamba and Kanengoni were subsequently sentenced to seven years in jail after being convicted of attempted murder only to be pardoned by President Robert Mugabe.
On Sunday MDC boycotted the burial of Retire Major General Javen Maseko saying they did not have his history.
