Kunonga denies politicking

Leader of the breakaway Anglican Church of the Province of
Zimbabwe, Bishop Nolbert Kunonga, has reneged on his previous gospel to
parishioners to support Zanu (PF).

Kunonga, who was excommunicated as Bishop of the Central Church of
the Province of Africa in 2008, capitalised on his allegiance to Zanu
(PF) to forcefully take control of CPCA properties.

This resulted in CPCA parishioners being barred from worshipping in
the Anglican Church buildings around the country.

During the period of Kunonga’s self-imposed reign, the tough-talking
Bishop openly declared his allegiance to Zanu (PF) during church
services while urging parishioners to vote for the party.

In a recent telephone interview with The Zimbabwean, Kunonga claimed
he was quoted out of context.

“I am a church man. I didn’t mobilise parishioners
to vote for Zanu (PF). It was out of my own conviction when I stood at
the pulpit to say the Land Reform Programme is a biblical thing and
should be supported. But after saying that, people began to say I was a
rebel leader. Is that being rebellious? The problem is that at times you
journalists exaggerate things,” said Kunonga.

Kunonga denied claims he bad mouthed the MDC-T.

“I stood at the pulpit to preach values that should be followed by
every Zimbabwean. I told people that it is evil to call for sanctions
in Zimbabwe. That is
not mobilising people to vote for any party,” said Kunonga.

In December last year, sources told The Zimbabwean that President Robert Mugabe, after consultations, was forced to drop Kunonga following
revelations that he had failed to bring any benefit to Zanu (PF).
Kunonga lost a five year battle for control of Anglican Church
properties in November 2012 after the Supreme Court ruled that
he had been ex-communicated and was therefore not entitled to CPCA
properties.
