Makoto now an international master

Rodwell Makoto's chess star is shining.The young man managed to bag in his last norm to become an International Master. He became the first Zimbabwean to win the most difficult Commwealth South African chess Open which attracts a lot of Grand Masters from very strong chess playing nations in the world.

He becomes the fourth International Master after Kudzanai Mamombe, Robert Gwaze and Farai Mandizha. Recently he finished second at the Botswana chess tourney which had IM norms at stake. In that tourney he lost to Gillian Bwalya of Zambia and CM Deon Solomons of South Africa before drawing one of his games to finish with 6,5 points out of 9 games of play.

He has been the force to rely on producing some good chess in Mozambique last year, He is the current National Champion for Zimbabwe who beat all his opponents in the field of play to finish with a perfect score.

Recently in Zimbabwe he won the Easter Open chess championships which he was joint first with Deon Moyo. Hevalso managed to win several South African Rapid play tournies. His biggest achievement was to win the Commonwealth in South Africa last year ahead of a strong field of Grand Masters. At the Olympiads last year he also played well stopping some Grand Masters and earned some important points for team Zimbabwe. Some Zimbabweans did not hide their joy with a lot of them posting some congratulatory messages. John Chibvuri said, Mamombe, Gwaze, Mandizha and Makoto who is next?"

His question is yet to be answered.I think very soon Zimbabwe will be having a very young WIM in the name of Refiloe Mudodo.She got a bronze medal in South Africa at the African Youth Chess Championships last year,got another bronze at Capablanca Memorial in South Africa again this year.At the age of

8 she is one of the most promising chess players on the ladies side to be a WIM.I think John your answer is here.
