Mawere’s party gears up for polls

The United Movement for Democracy Party launched here last week has said it is geared up for the polls expected in a few months’ time.

Ashirai Mutiriki-Mawere, Organising Secretary of the party led by Mutumwa Mawere, told The Zimbabwean “The problems affecting this country should be solved as soon as yesterday. In UMDP we have the means. So we are saying, even if elections are held tomorrow, we are ready – not as a ruling party but as government because we believe only God rules,” he said.

“We are bent on the restoration and prosperity of industry, education, the economy and creation of employment. These things were expected from the MDCs but they have failed to achieve them in five years. Instead of having one person refusing to cede power (Mugabe) we now have three more. One from Buhera ( PM Morgan Tsvangirai) another from Chimanimani (Deputy PM Author Mutambara) and another one from Bulawayo ( Welshman Ncube),” he added.

“Our president (Mutumwa Mawere) himself a visionary leader, shares a traceable history with citizens whose products of hard work were grabbed by the corrupt and greedy leading into the desperation of thousands of Zimbabweans,” he said.

In 2004, the then Zanu (PF) government grabbed Mawere’s Shabanie-Mashava asbestos mine and put it under “reconstruction, a development that has made the empire collapse. At its peak the firm contributed 10 percent to the Gross Domestic Product while employing thousands of people in Zvishavane. Though he was de-specified last year, Zanu (PF) has refused to give him his mine back. So he has solutions for industry and his experience at the World Bank shall be the panacea for our sick economy,” said Mutiriki-Mawere.

Thomas Musirinofa, the UMDP Elections Director, said his party would not hold primary polls to choose candidates for the next elections. “We will use our way of fielding effective, transparent and honest candidates. If about 10,000 people vote for us in our branches countrywide. We shall have 3 million votes to allow Mawere to occupy state house,” he said.
