President Robert Mugabe has defended the questionable sacking
of several MDC-T councillors and mayors by his close lieutenant,
Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Ignatius
Chombo.

Chombo, who has fired dozens of MDC-T councillors and mayors, last month axed the Mutare mayor Brian James.

Officially opening the Zimbabwe Local Government Association third Biennal Conference, Mugabe said the MDC-T officials were fired because they were corrupt “thieves”.

Mugabe said Chombo was merely following his orders. He accused the MDC-T councillors and mayors of enriching themselves using the ratepayer’s money.

However, Mugabe has failed to exercise the same powers on his own party officials who have been fingered in corruption, Chombo included.
