Ngodzo shines again

Former Zimbabwe Under-23 midfielder, Joel Ngodzo, looks back in shape, after a slow start to his FC Platinum career that began two seasons ago. The former Highlanders star has been one of the key players in FC Platinum’s promising start to the new campaign and assistant coach, Tendai Chikuni, was convinced that the 23-year-old would have a fulfilling season.

“Ngodzo has done extremely well so far and we are happy for him. He was dogged by a knee injury that hampered his progress for most of last season, but he has fully recovered now and his performances have improved. He has been consistent and has made some telling contributions in most of our matches,” said Chikuni.

The Zvishavane-based platinum miners have won six of their eight matches so far this season, conceding one draw and a defeat. Ngodzo was in fine form last week, when the side ground out a 2-2 draw against defending champions Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium.

He then rose from the bench to spark a surge that saw his side coast to a 1-0 home victory against league newcomers Tripple B.

“When he came on in the second half against Triple B, he changed the complexion of the game alongside fellow substitute, Michelle Kutsvairo, who scored the winner. His contributions have been consistent regardless of whether he is in the starting line-up or coming off the bench,” Chikuni said.

Ngodzo, an immaculate midfielder who impresses with close control, precise passing and eye for goal, was crowned joint Soccer Star of the year with Charles Sibanda in 2010.

He was also a key member of the exciting national Under-23 team that included Denvar Mukamba, Archieford Gutu, Ariel Sibanda, Simba Sithole and Lincoln Zvasiya.
