I am a student teacher at a school in Gweru. I am almost the same age with my students, and this is causing a respect problem with them. They see me as their mate and disrespect me. They hardly listen to me and never do my homework. I am so stressed with the job and I am afraid of failing them. How can I help them pass when they are not cooperating like this? – Miss Pee
Dear Miss Pee
It is difficult to help someone who doesn’t seem to want the help. With these school kids it is a pity they don’t appreciate how much you are dedicating your time and how determined you are to assist them. Even though you are almost the same age I believe you have something important to give them to share and they need not look much into your age – but to your position and your brains that got you to that position.
You need to sit them down and be their life coach for a session. Explain to them how important the final exam is to them – much more than it is to you. They need to help you help them. Explain the relationship you want to have with them. They need to know where to draw the line. You are there to help them and they should not be deceived by your looks. Communication is key and it will help you maintain a good relationship with your students. – Aunty Lisa
