The award, won by Anna Maria Mutetwa, a midwife at Mbuya Nehanda hospital, is a response to the public outcry against ill treatment of patients at health institutions.
Mutetwa walked away with a trip for two to the Victoria Falls plus $800, while runners up Custon Mandeya Masango and Vongai Jachi received $500 and $300, respectively, on top of hampers worth $200.
Service delivery at most primary, secondary and tertiary health institutions has over the past decade deteriorated due to the harsh economic environment.
This also resulted in the mass exodus of qualified and experienced heath personnel due to understaffing, lack of competitive salaries and excessive workloads which have had adverse effects on public health service delivery.
Addressing delegates at the awards ceremony, Director of Operations at the hospital, Edson Mundenda, said the awards are meant to improve service delivery at the institution.
He said: “The idea on introducing the award came upon the realisation of the public outcry against negative staff attitude at health institutions.”
“We have good nurses who go the extra mile in perfecting their work and this award aims at honouring them for their hard work. We hope that this is going to motivate other nurses to work even harder ,” said Mundenda.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital last year introduced a monthly award dubbed “Best Managed Ward” which saw the entire team in the winning ward being rewarded.
